Taking time away from the managerial fiasco at Everton it looks like the Toffees are closing in on their first summer signing; Matheus Nunes.

While the search for a new manager has been going on, Everton Director of Football Marcel Brands has been looking at new players and one of those is the Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Brazilian player had emerged as a target recently and still seems to be a player that the Blues are keen on despite all the uncertainty over who will be his manager at Goodison Park.

Everton have apparently been working behind the scenes to try and get this deal done even as the rumour mill continues to work overtime claiming first this manager and then that one is the favourite for the job.

Now according to the Sportwitness website a deal for the 22-year-old is very close and virtually certain to be done soon.

If this is true and that’s a big if of course, then it does mean the Toffees are not totally constrained in making new signings, even though players joining don’t know who they will be playing under, a slightly unusual position.

There are other players that Everton are also being continually linked with as the managerial waiting game goes on into another weekend.

The first of these players is the Milan forward Rafael Leao who it looks like is surplus to requirements at the San Siro and will be sold if a decent offer comes in for him.

The Blues have been linked with a move for Leao before and he is another young footballer who would fit in with Brands’ focus on signing talent within the 20-25 years age bracket.

While there is still great confusion over who will be in the Toffees dugout when the new campaign kicks off and his role in selecting that individual is uncertain, it looks as though Brands isn’t wasting time waiting to get recruits in and is working hard behiond the scenes.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

And with Carlo Ancelotti gone, it also feels like Brands is determined to get back to the transfer strategy he had before the Italian’s arrival in December 2019 resulted in a change to going for older and more experienced players like Allan and James Rodriguez.

Another player who is supposedly now also being linked with Everton is Spurs defender Matt Doherty. These reports claim that Nuno Espirito Santo has claimed if he gets the Everton job, he can bring Doherty with him.

The ex-Wolves player though doesn’t fit this profile of young talent although he is a player who could possibly solve the problem at right-back.

However, all the evidence indicates Santo who was the hot favourite a week ago has now fallen down the pecking order at Goodison and won’t be offered the job. This is a slightly strange one for sure and I think highly unlikely to be true.

But then again who knows now given the increasingly surreal nature of things at Everton Football Club these days!
