Once again the rumours keep coming and today Everton are supposedly now tracking Inter Milan and Netherlands centre-back Stefan De Vrij.

This report from an Inter website, claims Everton are genuinly interested in a move for De Vrij as the apparent search for central defensive reinforcement continues.

Although the story says the Toffees are certainly keen and the Italian champions may be willing to sell, any deal is a long way off.

De Vrij is a similar sort of defender to Clement Lenglet who has been repeatedly linked with a move to Goodison Park in the last few weeks.

The Dutchman is perhaps a stronger overall defender who would probably be more suited to playing in the Premier League than the Barcelona player.

Well this one again seems a highly speculative rumour, then again aren’t most of them! And another even stranger one is the idea that Everton might move to sign Manchester United player Phil Jones.

The Old Trafford defender has almost become a forgotten man over the past few years after at one time being considered a very promising player who was then hit by injuries and a decline in form. He’s been out of the United team for a long time now.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Now Jones is being hawked around by United as they try, along with so many other Premier League clubs including Everton, to offload expensive and unwanted players. Jones is not a player that the Toffees should or I believe will, be in for.

What bothers me most though is that while there are plenty of stories about new central defenders being linked to the Blues, reports about a right-back joining have gone very quiet recently.

Surely the Toffees most pressing defensive need is solving that problem.

There were until the last week or so, constant rumours surrounding several players, in particular De Vrij’s fellow Dutchman Denzel Dumfries.

After a lot of reports that Everton were pursuing him in competition with Inter, these stories have disappeared in recent days.

Other possible targets including Max Aarons also seem to have disappeared off the radar recently and it raises questions about whether the Blues are fully committed to adding a new right-back.

I sincerly hope that they do before deadline day otherwise I think the team will once again be lopsided and lacking in enough defensive balance, width and attacking creativity.
