Should Everton revive move for van de Beek in January

Reports claim that Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is still unhappy at Old Trafford and would consider a move away. So should Everton revive their interest in him?

There were rumours that Everton were keen to add the Dutchman to their squad before the summer transfer window closed but they couldn’t get a deal done as United wanted to keep him.

This is similar to what happened with the proposed move for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles on deadline day, which fell through because his club stopped it, also promising him more playing time.

Now there are fresh stories van de Beek is still not satisfied with his role at United and wants to re-consider any potential opportunity to leave for pastures new.

The Netherlands international made a big money move from Ajax to United last year but it hasn’t worked out for him and he’s made little impact at Old Trafford.

He’s found it difficult to get regular football with so much competition in central midfield as United have players such as Fred and Scott MacTominay who are preferred to the Dutchman as well as Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes ahead of him in the pecking order.

The Dutchman has some qualities that the Blues could certainly do with more of. He appears to be a strong player defensively and chips in with a few goals and assists too.

At the moment the Toffees central midfield two Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure have been excellent and key reasons for Everton’s fine start to the Premier League season.

But there is a lack of depth behind those players. Both of them have had past injury problems and if they were to be out for any significant length of time this season it would be a major blow and would have a serious impact on how Rafa Benitez likes to set his side up.

The fact that the obvious replacement in the current squad for one or other of them, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, is again recovering from yet another injury, makes the situation even more complicated.

Other possibilities Tom Davies and Andre Gomes simply don’t convince and anyway at the moment Gomes is also on the injured list.

The Blues have a lack of depth in several positions most of all of course at full-back and trying to rectify this must be the main priority in January.

Everton are though again being linked with a lot of midfielders at the moment including Juventus Welsh star Aaron Ramsey.

While to be honest I think I’d prefer an attacking player like Jesse Lingard from United, perhaps a loan deal in January for a player like van de Beek makes some sense giving the Toffees another option in the engine room to help the team push on during the second half of the campaign.

Do you think a move for the Dutchman makes sense or are there better alternatives?
