A few attacking players Everton should look at

There is just under three weeks before the January transfer window opens so let’s imagine Everton have some money to spend, then which attacking players could they look at?

There have been rumours that Everton boss Rafa Benitez is focusing on two areas of his team as a priority in January. Now, with Marcel Brands gone he is presumably free to pursue those targets without anyone second guessing his moves.

In addition, I assume that Benitez has been given assurances that he will have some, albeit limited, finances to bring in new players although whether that is in January or not we will see.

Those alledged priorities are for strengthening are a central midfielder and another wide attacker. We’ve recently looked at a few of the possibilities in midfield so what about the forward options?

Benitez wants a forward who can offer extra pace, creative ability and a goal threat as well as a player who can operate wide on either flank.

One player who ticks all those boxes is French forward Romain Faivre. The Brest player is enjoying a superb season in Ligue 1 and has netted seven times while adding another five assists.

He’s a left-footed 23-year-old so ticks all the boxes and would be an ideal addition to play generally on the right side of the attack.

Andros Townsend started there in the early days of the campaign but his form has declined and he’s also been operating more centrally as well in the last few matches.

The other current option to play on the right is Anthony Gordon and while the youngster has been solid enough and certainly deserved his chance, he is perhaps not ready to start every week and is still learning to find his feet in the Premier League.

Inter Milan were suposedly interested in Faivre last summer but didn’t go for him and he seems like a player who has slipped under the radar a little bit. However, if he keeps playing like this I would imagine that will change.

I’m sure I’m being very over optimistic here and it’s likely only loan deals will be coming through the door next month, but maybe if Everton have managed to sell a player or two and have some cash they might still have a chance to snap him up before a big European club make their move.

Another French attacker who is perhaps a much more realistic target for the Toffees’ given their position and finances is Rennes forward Gaetan Laborde.

The French league seems to have an adundance of native talent and Laborde is another fine attacking player to emerge there.

He is a 27-year-old who is versatile and can play in several positions including as a striker where he has scored five goals. He tends to play as a centre-forward but is also very comfortable operating on the flanks.

Again, like Faivre he is left-footed and likes to play on the right so would be a good fit for where Everton are looking to strengthen. In addition, he could obviously fill in at centre-forward if or more probably when, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is again injured, assuming he doesn’t leave!

Laborde’s current valuation is also around £13 million, which would make him much more affordable for the Blues’ at the moment.

This is just a bit of hopeful speculation on my part of course but it would be great to see Everton in a position to add a talent like one of these two, if not in January then in the summer.
