Luton Town secured their first promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship playoff final against Coventry City. Now ready to compete with the big boys of the Premier League, Luton are looking at ways to strengthen the side and have placed their eyes on Everton target Emiliano Martinez.

The FC Midtjylland defensive midfielder is attracting a lot of interest across Europe after a successful season at the Danish club. The Uruguayan played 33 games with seven of them coming in the Europa League and was a core member of Midtjylland’s midfield.

Everton were linked with Martinez around three weeks ago with the report suggesting that the Toffees had presented a firm offer to the 23 year old. French side Bordeaux were also in contention to sign Martinez but a decision was not yet made over his future.

Perhaps, Martinez would relatively be a low risk arrival to bolster the Everton midfield. Tom Davies will leave Everton as a free agent and doubts continue to linger over Amadou Onana’s future. In the event of Onana’s sale, EFC will need to reinforce their midfield. Idrissa Gueye will turn 34 this September and EFC will be searching for his successor too. Midtjylland’s Martinez is primarily a defensive midfielder and has impressed with his performances.

Everton face competition from Luton Town and West Ham for Emiliano Martinez

He may not be an immediate starter but can be moulded and polished into a battle ready Premier League midfielder. The Uruguayan is expected to leave Midtjylland this summer despite his contract running till 2027 at Midtjylland. Everton have now been joined by two other Premier League clubs in Martinez’s chase.

Journalist Rodri Vazquez, who broke the news about Everton’s interest, has now indicated that newly promoted Luton Town have joined the race alongside Everton and West Ham United. At this point, Premier League seems to be the 23 year old’s next destination as the three English clubs are considered to be the favourites to land Martinez.

EFC will still have to tussle for the defensive midfielder as West Ham and Luton remain equally interested. Martinez is valued at £3 million by Transfermarkt, an amount that the Toffees should be willing to afford and spend. West Ham United are possibly looking for Declan Rice replacement and could offer European football as the Hammers will play the Europa League next season, courtesy of their UEFA Conference League win.

Next. Everton will have to shell out upwards of £12.8m for player wanted by three PL clubs. dark
