Away form is keeping Everton season afloat

On Saturday afternoon, the Blues recovered from going a goal down to beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage and move up to eighth position in the Premier League, continuing the strong showings on their travels recently.

This win represents another success on the road for Everton, who have increasingly come to rely on their efforts when away from Merseyside to sustain a season that was in danger of losing momentum over the New Year.

December ended with the Toffees winning at Nottingham Forest to complete the double over them. But then January was a frustrating and disappointing month, started by the team suffering a dreadful 4-2 defeat at home to Brentford, followed by a draw against bottom club Wolves, and then going out of the FA Cup on penalties at Sunderland in frankly embarrassing fashion.

Everton managed only a single win all month, again away from home at Villa Park, as the team struggled with the absence of Idrissa Gueye and Illman Ndiaye at the Africa Cup of Nations and a succession of injuries.

February has started a little better with Saturday's victory in West London following a last-gasp equaliser against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on the final day of January.

In addition, those players who were absent -- including Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who netted the equaliser against Fulham -- have now returned to the side along with new addition Tyrique George, leaving David Moyes with his strongest squad to pick from, bar Jack Grealish, now out for the remainder of the season.

So, given all that, it would seem as though there is a chance for the Toffees to make a renewed attempt to try and climb the table and stay in the hunt to secure European football, if they can.

But while the team's form on their travels remains a consistent route to points and suits the way Moyes wants to set up his Everton side, the Blues need to recover their poise at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, where they have not won for two months since beating Forest on the 6th of December.

If the Toffees can rediscover some solid home form, then, because there are so many evenly matched teams in the Premier League, that ability to regularly collect points on the road just might prove the difference.
