Barry must add goals to his work rate before Everton go into New Year window

Striker Thierno Barry produced a very hard-working one-man display, leading the line as the Toffees took a one-nil lead and then held on for a huge victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night.

His efforts contributed to a win in a remarkable match that featured a very unusual incident involving Idrissa Gueye and Micheal Keane that led to Gueye's sending off, and forced Everton to defend a slender one goal lead with ten men for the majority of the game.

Barry certainly did his utmost to contribute to that outcome; in fact, he did pretty much everything but score a second goal, something which would probably have sealed the points and relieved the pressure on his team.

And that is the problem with the £27 million summer signing. The Frenchman offers excellent movement, work rate, and willingness to play for the team, but he is unable to find the back of the net.

In his defence, his team-mate and the club's other senior striker, Beto, has only scored one goal himself this season, so Barry is not exactly on his own in this regard.

Inevitably, given the lack of goals from these two forwards, there has been increasing talk of the Toffees having to go back into the transfer market for yet another striker when the January window opens.

That is obviously not an ideal situation, meaning that Everton will possibly have to fork out a considerable fee once again to secure a new striker in what is always a particularly difficult month to do any transfer business in.

But, of course, there is another solution, and that is for Barry and perhaps Beto as well to find their shooting boots before the New Year and so save the Blues another few million in transfer fees.

With the run-in to the Christmas and New Year period looming, the Toffees have a series of important Premier League matches coming up, so there will be plenty of opportunities for Barry to prove his doubters wrong and justify Everton's faith in him.
