The seventh signing of the summer for Everton is, to be fair, a bit of an underwhelming one, but it is necessary.
Goalkeeper Tom King joins Everton from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee. The Welsh international will come in as the Toffees' third goalkeeper behind Jordan Pickford and Mark Travers.
King, who turned 30 in March, has now played for 10 teams around England, ranging from the National League (Braintree Town in 2015/16 and Welling United the following year), to League Two (Stevenage, Newport County, Salford City, and Northampton), and League One (Millwall and AFC Wimbledon).
While at Wolves, he managed just one PL2 match and a one-minute cameo in the Premier League. He really only has two seasons as a regular starter, 2019/20 with Newport County and 2021/22 with Salford City, both in League Two.
So while King has no top-flight experience, he has played in enough matches as a professional to make you feel fairly confident in him as a second-choice goalkeeper if it came down to it. The hope, of course, is that David Moyes never has a need to use its third goalkeeper, but it's still an important player to have on the squad.
King mentioned that he's excited to be at Everton "with the world-class stadium" and that he "can't wait to get going and be a part of it."
The news means that Harry Tyrer will be allowed to leave on loan, with Heart of Midlothian of the Scottish Premier League eyeing a move for the young goalkeeper. The player, who will turn 24 in December, has had successful loan spells over the last two seasons at Chesterfield in the National League and Blackpool in League One.
In the meantime, the trio of Pickford, Travers, and King should be more than sufficient to cover Everton's goalkeeping spot down for this and the next few seasons.
