Everton vs Birmingham City match preview
Can Everton bounce back, following a very disappointing derby day defeat? The Toffees, remarkably, won each of the first five WSL Merseyside derbies played at Anfield, but that sequence was shattered last Sunday. Scott Phelan's team were second best throughout as Everton were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool, a match far more one-sided than the scoreline would suggest.
This means that the Toffees have won two and lost two in the WSL so far, perhaps foreshadowing another mid-table finish. The Blues had enjoyed back-to-back 1-0 wins, beating both Charlton at home and West Ham at Victoria Road, benefiting from an own goal both times. Thus, despite being sat sixth in the table, no Everton player has actually scored a league goal so far this season. Will that change at Goodison on Sunday?
Birmingham City meantime, back in the top-flight for the first time in five seasons, are still searching for their first WSL win of the campaign. Amy Merricks' side have been involved in two absolute thrillers already this week, suggesting this game will be entertaining.
Last weekend, the Blues shared six goals with Crystal Palace at St Andrew's, twice leading thanks to Océane Hurtré, only to require a last gasp equaliser from Suzu Amano to rescue a point.
Then, on Wednesday, Birmingham were involved in a seven goal encounter with Liverpool in the League Cup. Marie Levasseur, Lee Geum-min and Wilma Leidhammar were all on target, seemingly doing enough to earn the Blues a point, only for the Reds to snatch victory with the last kick of the night.
Speaking of the WSL Players Cup, as already mentioned, Everton beat Birmingham 2-0 at Goodison just 11 days ago, so will those in attendance on Merseyside expirence a sense of déjà vu?
Everton team news
Unlike their visitors, Scott Phelan's team have had a full week to prepare for this fixture. Defender Issy Hobson suffered a long-term injury against Birmingham during the League Cup tie, while Hannah Silcock is a doubt, after going off against her former club last weekend, leaving Phelan short of defenders.
Birmingham City team news
Amy Merricks' side were in League Cup action on Wednesday, making nine changes against Liverpool, with Marie Levasseur and Veatriki Sarri the only players to start both. Thus, it will be interesting to see if anyone impressed to come into the first team.
