We take a break from Premier League action this week as Everton take on Wolverhampton in the EFL Cup. The Toffees had a bad transfer window, which resulted in the club being left with just one senior centre-forward, Thierno Barry. However, there were positives such as Jack Grealish returning to the club on loan from Manchester City.
The Toffees started the campaign well and are unbeaten after five games in all competitions. They defeated Crystal Palace in the Premier League and then Preston North End in the EFL Cup. However, they have drawn their last three league games, which were against AFC Bournemouth, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Wolves are currently seventh in the Championship and go into this game on the back of defeating Sheffield United 1-0. They have made it to the third round of the EFL Cup after beating Port Vale and Sheffield Wednesday.

Since the 4-0 dismantling of Wolves by the Toffees in 2024, matches between the two sides have been relatively tight affairs.
Everton had a win and a draw against Wolves in the Premier League last season. At the end of that campaign, Wolves were relegated. The Toffees had a drop-off at the end of the campaign and ended up finishing ninth, missing out on qualifying for Europe.
Wolves defeated Everton at this stage of the competition last year. However, they were then edged out 4-3 by Chelsea in the fourth round.
The EFL Cup is often seen as a bonus for many clubs. Wolves' target will be to get back to the Premier League. As for Everton, a run in the cup will be good for the club. However, qualifying for Europe via the league will also be a focus. However, with a squad lacking depth in key areas, David Moyes' side going out of the cup may be a blessing in disguise.
