Everton are being linked with an ever-growing collection of potential forward signings, and Baras Alper Yilmaz becomes the latest and a rather unlikely one at that.
Although it is early days in the summer transfer window, it is already beginning to feel like the Blues might be in for another frustrating chase for their first-choice targets.
Liam Delap—whom Everton had approached and offered a deal to—has instead chosen to go to Chelsea, primarily because of the lure of Champions League football.
And while he is a player who was only tenuously linked to the Toffees, Burnley's Josh Brownhill also looks as though he will be moving to West Ham United instead.
Manager David Moyes has alluded to the problems the club could have attracting the players they really want.
Although the Blues are about to move into their brand new Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock and have new owners with plenty of ambition and cash to spend, the lack of European football is a drawback in securing top talent.
Another player Everton want is Liverpool's young winger Ben Doak, and while he falls into the gettable and affordable bracket, the Blues' neighbours may not, in the end, be willing to do a deal.
So, it is perhaps not a complete surprise that stories are circulating claiming the club are casting the net wider now.
Even so, this one does not seem to have much legs as Yilmaz wouldn't represent the calibre of footballer the Toffees are interested in now, given the Friedkin Group is in charge.
The Turkish star is a versatile player who can operate either out wide in attack or at full-back, and this would, in theory, kill two birds with one stone as the Blues are looking for reinforcements in both those positions.
But of course, there is always a big question mark over whether a player from the Super Lig could cut it in English top-flight football. And in addition, the fee quoted of £30 million is way too high.
Previously, Everton have signed a Turkish international when they brought in Cenk Tosun, and although he worked hard, he never convinced and failed to provide a decent goal threat. Would Yilmaz prove just another expensive dud to add to the long list from the recent past?
All in all, this surely falls into the category 'very unlikely', but if the Toffees do find it a continuing struggle to bring in the players they want, then a move for someone from a different and less glamorous source may have to become a viable alternative.
