Merlin Röhl's permanent transfer is finally formally announced

It was mostly paperwork, but the midfielder is no longer here on loan.

The addition of Merlin Röhl as a permanent player for Everton was essentially a formality, and so the fanfare around his ascending from loanee to full squad player was fairly muted.

Almost in tandem with the larger deal for Tyrique George, the club tossed in a second notice about
Röhl's confirmation as a permanent Everton player.

The midfielder joined Everton last summer on a loan deal from SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga, but the loan stipulated that Röhl would transition into a full-time Everton player after the loan ended. It is notable that there were no discussions around the fee this summer, suggesting that all those details were part of the initial loan.

The newly minted 24-year-old played 17 times for Everton last season, making his debut in Matchweek 4 with a 25-minute cameo against Aston Villa at the Hill Dickinson. He scored his one and only goal in a 3-1 loss to Sunderland on May 17 at home.

He will be part of a midfield unit that includes newly signed Hayden Hackney, along with James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to be sure. The futures of Idrissa Gana Gueye, Tim Iroegbunam, Charly Alcaraz, and Harrison Armstrong, in different ways, are in question.

The Germany Youth international spent some time at right back as well, although there is no indication that Everton manager David Moyes sees Röhl as part of the solution at a position of great need for Everton.

But Röhl should have the opportunity to be part of the mix in the engine room next year, having already earned Moyes' trust to a certain extent. And while he may not be a nailed-on starter given the other names around him, it stands to reason that he can be KDH's direct deputy.

The good news is that with George, Röhl, and the lost-but-not-forgotten Tyler Dibling, there does seem to be a concerted effort by the club to bring in young talent on the rise as the spine of its team in many ways.

There remain the veteran presences of Jordan Pickford, KDH, James Tarkowski, and others in the group, but the hope is that adding these younger players indicates a true change in Everton's approach to the transfer windows, even if they don't only target young players.

But with three moves made permanent already this window, the youth movement, at least in part, is well and truly on at Everton.
