New Everton CEO gets an earlier-than-expected start to new role

Angus Kinnear officially begins his tenure today, a few weeks ahead of schedule. What impact will this have on the transfer window.

Way back in March, Everton announced that then-current Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear would be joining Everton in the same role. That appointment, however, came with an unfortunate caveat: Kinnear would not be available to join until June 1.

But in a surprise bit of news, Everton sent out a message this morning stating that Kinnear would begin his term on Merseyside earlier than expected and has already taken on his new role as CEO for the club.

There has been no indication as to what changed, but it is certainly possible that Leeds' recent promotion to the Premier League instigated a need for immediate movement, as they'll look to strengthen their squad as soon as the summer transfer window opens, with a possible eye on an Everton player as they seek to remain in the top flight after next season.

This is very good news from an Everton perspective, as there was a great deal of hang wringing going on as to how Kinnear coming on just as the window was opening could hamstring the Toffees as they head into a vital summer term.

With a reported new transfer structure being put into place upon the departure of Kevin Thelwell to Rangers and seeing head of recruitment Dan Purdy follow the Director of Football out the door, there will be a lot to work out that has nothing to do with what players Everton need to sign in order to improve the squad.

So the ability to get an early start on figuring that out could be paramount to success in transfer window, as the new transfer board can quickly turn its attention to seeking out players and getting them in the door as soon as possible.

The question of whether this is a good strategy in 2025 isn't up for debate, as this appears to be the way forward for Everton at the moment.

With that being the case, having Kinnear in his office in mid-May rather than the first of June is a boon for Everton at a time when it was greatly needed.
