What was a little concerning was that the Everton side David Moyes picked yesterday and lost with was nearly full strength based on his current threadbare squad.
Of course, it is early days in the preseason and you often see Premier League teams struggling to get anywhere near their best in these first few games.
In addition, these matches are largely about fitness and improving the players' sharpness, which has inevitably declined since the end of last season.
However, there are still concerning aspects to yesterday's game and the previous one at Accrington Stanley, such as the lack of goal threat, with Beto looking way off the pace and the continuing problems defending set-pieces.
Having said all that, Everton did produce some decent football at times yesterday, with several players standing out and showing promise for the upcoming season.
In particular, the youngest players, as they had against Accrington Stanley, were the most impressive, especially midfielder Harrison Armstrong, who once again excelled when he came on.
I think Armstrong should stay at Everton this season and not be loaned out again, as he certainly looks to have the talent and maturity to make an impact in the first team.
And anyway, given the lack of numbers at the moment, Moyes may have no choice but to turn to him to some extent next season.
Regardless of Armstrong's situation, it is obvious that the Blues still need a significant number of new players and hopefully at least one or two in by the time the club fly out to the US for the next phase of their preseason preparations.
Meanwhile, transfer rumours continue unabated, with an ever-growing list of players being linked, often again and again, with a move to Everton this summer.
But still we wait for those much-needed new signings, and indeed some of the news indicates that one of the Toffees' recent targets, Evan Ferguson, is joining The Friedkin Group's sister club AS Roma.
Such a story raises worrying elements as to whether the owners are prioritising the Italian club over their new acquisition on Merseyside.
Furthermore, other players allegedly targeted by Everton appear to be going to Premier League rivals, underlying the sense of frustration that players might be slipping through the Blues' fingers.
