Rumoured Callum Wilson move is not what Everton need up front

Media reports claim the Blues have joined Premier League newcomers Leeds United in the race for the former England international striker.

As we all know, the most pressing problem that Everton and manager David Moyes need to solve this summer is the lack of goals in this Toffees team.

Only the three relegated sides this season have scored fewer goals than the Blues, and with former number one centre-forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin almost certainly leaving in this transfer window, Moyes knows he needs reinforcements up front.

2023 signing Beto, who replaced Calvert-Lewin in the side this season, has netted ten times, a decent return considering he had hardly played more than a few minutes before Moyes took over from Sean Dyche.

The Portuguese striker has certainly had his struggles since coming to the Premier League in 2023, but he has surely shown enough this campaign to merit another chance in a royal blue shirt.

After him, however, there is very little in terms of additional and proven firepower. The only other option in the first-team squad is Youssef Chermiti, but he is young, inexperienced, and has barely had a look-in either.

Everton have been strongly linked with a move for Ipswich Town's sought-after forward Liam Delap, and reports claim the Toffees have tabled a tempting offer to his representatives.

However, Delap has plenty of options with Chelsea and Manchester United both known to be strong admirers of him. And they may be able to offer either potentially more money or European football, or both.

So, if the former Manchester City academy graduate decides to go to one of these clubs, the Blues may have to look elsewhere, and that is where this report about Callum Wilson's future comes in.

Wilson's club, Newcastle United (who are also interested in Delap), are willing to let the 33-year-old leave Tyneside, although they have offered him a new contract on reduced terms, and Leeds United are said to be keen to get him.

According to fresh rumours, Everton will compete with Leeds for Wilson if the striker does indeed choose to move on.

Wilson has a decent record in the Premier League and has plenty of experience too. But signing a forward well over the age of 30 with a recent history of significant injuries really does not make much sense.

What the Toffees need is a young striker with something to prove, who Moyes can build around for the future, and who can provide real competition for Beto for a starting place up front.
