Despite speculation linking Everton to Jamie Vardy, the striker will not be making the move to Goodison Park.

Once the ridiculously high number of injuries resolve themselves, Everton are pretty much set for the season, with a squad capable of challenging for a top four spot. With one exception.

The Blues still need another striker. Despite criticisms relating to Romelu Lukaku’s poor work-rate and penchant for disappearing in big games, it doesn’t change the fact his goals will be missed.

In that respect, Everton have linked to a whole bevvy of forwards in the last couple of months. However, time is now fast running out to find an appropriate replacement for Lukaku, with the Blues frantically searching high and low.

This frantic search has seen the People’s Club turn their attention towards Leicester City. As reported by John Richardson of the Mirror, Everton are making a late bid to sign Jamie Vardy.

Certainly, this apparent interest makes a lot of sense, with Vardy scoring 40 goals over the past two campaigns (with another two so far this season). He was named FWA Footballer of the Year when Leicester won the league and is now a full England international, with six goals in 16 appearances.

The 30-year-old is renowned for his work ethic and ability to even create chances for other players. The question is, why would he consider Everton, after turning down the opportunity to move to Arsenal following Leicester’s title-winning season?

Whether we want to accept it or not, until proven otherwise, Arsenal are a stronger team than the Blues. Perhaps the one aspect which could persuade Vardy to come to Merseyside, is the fact Everton’s Director of Football is Steve Walsh, who used to the Foxes’ talent spotter.

However, this still won’t be enough. Vardy only signed a new contract last summer and, as reported by the Leicester Mercury‘s Mark Clayton, the Sheffield-born player wants to cement his status with the Foxes and their fans.

As such, the Blues must continue their search elsewhere, to find a striker capable of scoring 20+ goals this season. In truth, finding someone appropriate at this last stage seems unlikely, but Evertonians can still hope.
