Everton are reportedly interested in England international Danny Welbeck, but is the injury-prone forward worth taking a gamble on?

On Monday, we shared information relating to a report that Everton will go back in for Olivier Giroud, when the January transfer window opens. Even more interesting, is the claim they will get their man this time.

We’ve already explained why we don’t believe it’s so clear cut Giroud will end up on Merseyside. And if the latest speculation is anything to go by, the Blues themselves are making sure they have at least one backup plan.

As per a report from the Echo’s Joe Rimmer, Everton may turn to another Arsenal forward to solve their scoring issues up front. More specifically Danny Welbeck, who they’ve been linked with before.

With under two years remaining on his current contract, Welbeck has been in negotiations over a new deal. Rimmer writes that Everton will register their interest in him, if the contract talks are unsuccessful.

On the surface at least, we can’t see this coming to fruition, at least not in January. At that point, Welbeck will still have another season and a half to go, meaning there is no rush for Arsenal to sell him.

In addition, Alexis Sanchez is on his way out, whether it be in January or the end of the season. The last thing Arsene Wenger wants to do, is leave himself short of options in attack.

Another aspect to consider, is Welbeck’s durability issues. His professional career to date, has been blighted by several absences.

In that respect, the 26-year-old is currently out with a groin problem and not expected to return until after next month’s international break. Regardless, he still offers an intriguing possibility.

Weleck is physical and very good in the air, while also possessing an excellent work ethic. In addition, he offers the pace up front Everton are desperately lacking right now.

The former Manchester United player would bring a winning mentality to the Blues, as evidenced by a Premier League title, two FA Cups and a couple of League Cups. He’s also proven himself at the international level, with 15 goals in 36 appearances for England.

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons, when it comes to deciding whether to take a risk on Welbeck. However, we still don’t see him joining Everton, at least not during the January transfer window.
