Player ratings

Jordan Pickford (6.5/10)

Had little to do, but when he was called into action, he was mostly solid. Mostly. Unfortunately for Pickford and the team, his one mistake was being faked out on the goal, which can happen to the best (and worst!) of us.

Leighton Baines (6.5)

(Booked.) Once again, it almost seems like we should copy and paste Baines’ game performance, after another energetic effort with him flying up and down the left side. The only reason we’re lowering his rating ever so slightly, is due to his yellow card.

Ashley Williams (6)

Appeared more solid than some of his recent outings. However, this was at least partly down to having Keane next to him in central defence.

Michael Keane (7)

Settled right back into the team, despite this being his first game since returning from injury. Was strong at the back and outstanding in the air.

Cuco Martina (6.5)

Unlike Baines, Martina did little moving forward. However, he put in an excellent performance in defence which, to be fair, is his main priority.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (5)

Is it possible Sigurdsson was overrated all this time? It almost seems unfair to ask this question, when at least some of the blame has to go on the tactics. Regardless, he needs to be doing and showing a lot more than he is right now, with Sunday representing another disappointing display.

Idrissa Gueye (5.5)

Admittedly not one of Gueye’s better performances. He did nothing wrong, but at the same time he also did nothing in general.

Morgan Schneiderlin (6)

As with Gueye, Schneiderlin did little wrong. However, he was actually slightly better than his teammate and in our humble opinion, Koeman took the wrong central midfielder off.

Nikola Vlasic (6.5)

Despite being one of Everton’s less high profile signings this summer, he’s actually looking like one of the better ones right now. We’re not sure if this is actually a good thing or not.

Oumar Niasse (5.5)

Worked hard enough, obviously buoyed by scoring three times in his previous two games. Regardless, he struggled to link up well with Calvert-Lewin and probably should have been substituted earlier.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (6.5)

(Booked.) As we mentioned above, did not link up well with Niasse. However, Calvert-Lewin looked like the more dangerous threat and his talent is definitely something Koeman needs to better utilise.

Substitutes:

Wayne Rooney (6)

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

(Replaced Schneiderlin on 63 minutes.) We don’t actually blame Koeman for starting Rooney on the bench – the guy needed a break at some point! Regardless, he should have been introduced to the action sooner. Put in his usual effort and had his moments, but was unable to find that one bit of magic the team — and especially his manager — needed.

Tom Davies (6)

(Replaced Vlasic on 69 minutes.) Some people — and by some, I mean us — find it interesting Koeman bought Davies on instead of Davy Klaassen. However, he deserved the opportunity after the way he’s performed this season. Settled right into the action, but was unable to provide a repeat of the Bournemouth game, where he was involved in both of Niasse’s goals.

Sandro Ramirez (N/A)

(Replaced Niasse on 82 minutes.) Wasn’t on the pitch long enough to make an impact, so we won’t rate him. Would have obviously been different if, for example, he’d scored. (Or with the way things are going for Everton right now, scored an own goal.)
