When Everton sold Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United in 2023, they included a 15% sell-on clause in the deal. Therefore, with Gordon now set to sign for Barcelona, the Toffees will get an injection of cash from this.
The Athletic has reported that "Barcelona have reached an agreement to sign forward Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. The two sides have agreed a deal worth €80 million (£69.3m; $93.2m) for the winger, with a sell-on clause also included."
Everton sold Gordon to Newcastle for £40 million, so the Magpies will make a profit of £69.3 million on the player. Everton is entitled to a percentage of the profit, which would mean they get in the region of £4.39 million.
This is not huge money, but a bonus to Everton for the development of a player who has now gone on to join one of the biggest clubs in the world. The player joined Everton when he was 11 after being released by Liverpool's academy.
Everton should be proud of developing Anthony Gordon
He went on to play 78 times for the Toffees, scoring seven goals with eight assists. He also gained experience on loan to Preston North End. He was a good player for Everton and was key to them keeping their Premier League status. However, due to forcing his move to Newcastle by not showing up to training, he is not so popular anymore amongst Toffees fans.
Gordon also grew up as a Liverpool fan, and there was talk that he could join the club when he was at Newcastle. When Gordon joined Newcastle, the club had ambitions of becoming an elite club in Europe under the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. However, success has been slowed by the Premier League's profitability and sustainability regulations.
He did win the EFL Cup with Newcastle last season. However, this campaign has been difficult for the Magpies, who finished 12th in the Premier League. Saudi Arabian investment has dropped in many sports, including golf, and there are reports that Newcastle could be affected by their change in strategy.
Gordon only scored six goals with two assists in 26 Premier League games this season. However, he managed 10 goals and two assists in 12 Champions League matches. This does include the player scoring four against Qarabag. His record in Europe has been noted by top clubs on the continent. He was also linked with Bayern Munich before Barcelona came in for him.
