Maupay move on again as Everton finally agree Marseille loan deal

Striker Neal Maupay looks to have secured a move away from Merseyside as the French forward appears to be joining Marseille on a year-long loan.

This was a move that seemed dead-in-the-water just days ago as Everton were apparently not happy with the terms that would have been needed to secure a transfer of the player.

Now though it could well be back on and the former Brighton player - who has never settled at Goodison Park since his move late in the 2022 summer transfer window - will finally be on his way to the French club.

Maupay is clearly not in manager Sean Dyche's plans and after a disastrous initial time at the Blues when he consistently failed to impress, he had left for Brentford on loan last season.

That move went reasonably well from his point of view as he managed to score a few goals for the Bees, something he had conspicuously been unable to do at Everton.

Despite though netting eight times for the London club, they elected not to turn his loan into a permanent move and so he returned to the Toffees this summer.

Such a situation did not suit either the Blues or Maupay and it always seemed that the best solution was for him to find another club.

If he does indeed leave for Ligue 1, then that might well rule out any chance of Dominic Calvert-Lewin going before the transfer deadline finishes on Friday, as such a situation would leave Dyche very short of options up front.

As it is, he only has Calvert-Lewin and Beto fit with Yousef Chermiti out long-term and Maupay presumably now on his way to pastures new.

Of course, a big bid for Calvert-Lewin tomorrow could change that, but it would be massive gamble this late in the window to let him leave as well as Maupay with no gurantee of a replacement being available.

Whatever happens tomorrow and after two losses without a goal to their name, Everton have to find a way to score goals in the Premier League - whoever is playing up front - starting with Saturday's crunch clash at Goodison against Bournemouth.
